Pupils learn life-saving skills

CHILDREN from Emersons Green Primary School learned skills that could save a life when they visited a Bristol education centre.

Year 6 pupils from the school visited safety education charity Lifeskills at the Create Centre in Hotwells to learn from volunteers about hazards they could encounter in the home or outside, and how best to handle them.

The centre, which recently welcomed its 200,000th visitor, has recreations of 18 different scenes, from shops and a beach to a railway platform and a dark alleyway.

The latest to be installed is a building site, sponsored by Emersons Green-based company Uplands Construction, which has been designed to teach general site safety, how to help a casualty in need of first aid and call an ambulance.

Pupils from Emersons Green have been visiting Lifeskills since 2002.

The charity’s partnership and development manager Sam Jury said: “The children are entering an important stage in their lives and this experience helps them to gain the knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and independence they’ll need in preparation for the years ahead.

“However, in the current economic climate affordability for trips is affecting some schools, which is a growing concern.

“We’re grateful to businesses like Uplands, as their sponsorship is enabling us to continue to heavily subsidise the cost to schools, meaning that thousands of children will benefit from our invaluable activities and keep them safe in the future.”

Uplands director Kevin Feldman said: “Uplands are very proud to support Lifeskills’ safety programmes and it’s great to see how their scenarios complement important safety topics.

“We pride ourselves on our approach to health and safety, and this is a perfect extension of our vision to help create safe working environments for everyone our business impacts.”

Lifeskills marks its 25th anniversary next year and is inviting previous visitors to share stories about how it has made a real-life difference.
