Brownies are litter champions

A BROWNIE pack became the latest recruits to join Emersons Green’s Litter Champions initiative to keep the area tidy.

Leaders of 2nd Mangotsfield Brownies contacted Emersons Green Town Council offering to help clean up the area, and the council supplied them with litter pickers and bags.

The brownies took part in a sweep from their base at St James Church Hall in Richmond Road, along Emersons Green Lane to the park in September, filling up several bin bags with rubbish as they went.

Town council environmental services manager Paul Kearsley said: “The town council were so proud to support the 2nd Mangotsfield Brownies with their fantastic litter pick.

“It’s always inspiring to see young people taking such pride in their community.

“If you want to get involved too, our Litter Champions initiative is open to everyone — whether you’re looking to make a difference locally, boost your Duke of Edinburgh Award hours, or simply care about keeping our community clean and green.”

The Litter Champions initiative, supported by both the town council and South Gloucestershire Council, aims to “create a cleaner, greener neighbourhood that we can all take pride in” by encouraging volunteers to adopt part of their neighbourhood and giving them the equipment they need to keep it tidy.

They said: “A litter champion is a local hero dedicated to keeping our neighbourhood clean and beautiful.

“By adopting a small stretch of our community, you commit to keeping it litter-free, ensuring a cleaner environment for everyone to enjoy.

“Litter picking is also a great way to get outdoors, boost mental health, well-being and self-esteem.”

People are encouraged to choose a small area and commit picking litter on their own, in a group or with their family, with the council co-ordinating patches to prevent any overlapping.

They are then offered litter pickers, gloves, hoops and bin bags to help with the job, along with safety advice.
