PUPILS from Pucklechurch Primary School joined children from across South Gloucestershire to perform in a massed choir.
The Year 5 pupils rehearsed at school with professional musicians for ten weeks from January to March, before coming together with pupils from four other schools for a performance of ‘Elements’, a 25-minute original work by children’s writer Jamila Gavin.
Head of school Gemma Jones said: “Our recent participation in the Voices for Life Elements Project gave our year 5 children memories to treasure for ever.
“Their parents watched proudly as they experienced performing at St Michael’s Centre, Stoke Gifford with a professional ensemble directed by Sarah Kettlety.”
Pupils have also been building their confidence by reading to a dog in the school library.
Funf the German shepherd dog, who lives locally, has trained with charity Therapy Dogs to sit and help create a calm atmosphere for children to read in. She visits every week.
Mrs Jones said: “We’ve really noticed a difference in their reading fluency, which Funf can certainly take credit for! The children enjoy their weekly reading session with a difference, and report that reading to a dog is more fun than reading to a human!”
The school, which recently celebrated being ranked 14th out of 110 South Gloucestershire schools for Year 6 SATs results, has recently formed a temporary federation with Coniston Primary School in Patchway.
Mrs Jones, who was previously deputy head, becomes had of school after previous head teacher Alex Capel stepped down at the end of last year.
Coniston Primary School head teacher Alan Walters becomes executive head teacher of both schools.
