SOUTH Gloucestershire Council is making legal moves to reduce the speed limit on a long stretch of the Avon Ring Road to 40mph.
The council announced almost two years ago that it intended to reduce the limit on the westbound A4174 to 40mph between the Bromley Heath and Abbey Wood roundabouts.
It was proposed as part of plans to widen paths to create two-way cycle lanes alongside the A4174 – work which is currently being carried out.
At the time the council proposed that the speed limit on the eastbound carriageway would remain at 50mph.
But updated plans published in a statutory notice, currently open for consultation, propose that the road should have a 40mph limit in both directions.
Outlining the reasons for the cut in the speed limit, the council said: “The proposed reduction in speed limit from 50mph to 40mph between Abbey Wood Roundabout and Bromley Heath Roundabout and the proposed 30mph speed limit at the entrance to UWE, is intended to improve safety for all road users.
“As part of wider corridor upgrades, this section will see increased pedestrian and cyclist activity due to new crossings and segregated paths. Lowering the speed limit will help reduce collision risk, improve crossing safety, and support the scheme’s goal of encouraging sustainable travel. This change is a targeted measure to create a safer, more inclusive transport environment in line with regional and national transport objectives.”
Comments can be made on the plans until October 4 via an online questionnaire on the consultation section of the council’s website, at tinyurl.com/yxp87zcn.
