Groot wins scarecrow prize

CROWDS headed to Pucklechurch on the first bank holiday weekend in May for the annual village scarecrow trail.

The event is organised by St Thomas a Becket church and supported by organisations and individuals.

This year’s competition boasted 48 scarecrows on the theme of fictional characters.

Entries included Long John Silver, Gollum from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the Cat in the Hat and several characters inspired by Bristol’s Aardman Animations, including an aggressive-looking Shaun the Sheep.

Visitors voted Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy as their favourite scarecrow, while Paddington Bear and Knuckles, created by HMP Ashfield, proved an arresting sight.

The  lucky dip prize was won by the Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley characters produced by the 1st Pucklechurch Brownies.

A church spokesperson said: “It was a joy to welcome people of all ages into our beautiful church and to see them out and about in the village enjoying the trail.

“A huge thanks to our scarecrow makers and our visitors, who bring enthusiasm and fun every year, and to our sponsors.”

The event raised £3,692, which will go towards the upkeep and services of the church.
